4K TV is not yet fully popularized, 8K TV still has a long way to go

TV display technology has always been "the wave behind the Yangtze River and the wave ahead". Some technologies can dominate the rivers and lakes for many years, but some technologies are quickly replaced and declined. It can be said that the update iteration of color TV products and technologies is second to none in the home appliance industry. In recent years, 4K TV and even 8K TV have become new hot words in the color TV industry pursuing more ultra-clear and higher-quality viewing.

4K TV is not yet fully popularized, 8K TV still has a long way to go

However, despite the development for more than four years, despite the dual drive of upstream panel manufacturers and TV manufacturers to increase profitability, 4K TV has not ushered in the expected market blowout. According to data from the Chinese Academy of Engineering, China produced 33 million 4K TV sets in 2017, accounting for 42% of the world's total 4K TV sets. It is estimated that the number of 4K households in the world will exceed 330 million in 2020, and China will become the world's largest 4K TV consumer market. In other words, it is too early for 4K TVs to dominate the market.

Of course, the home appliance market is still absolutely optimistic about 4K TVs. The industry generally believes that the demand for 4K TV panels will maintain a strong momentum in 2018, not only in the application of 4K panels in super-large TVs, even including 50-inch TVs. According to data, the proportion of ultra-high-definition TV sales is expected to reach 99% in the 60-inch or larger TV market for the first time this year.

4K TV is not yet fully popularized, 8K TV still has a long way to go

The popularity of 4K TV is still a long way off, let alone 8K TV. In the 2016 Rio Olympics, Japan’s NHK TV station used 8K signals to broadcast the opening and closing ceremonies, and the word “8K” became a hot topic. Subsequently, 8K panels and 8K TVs became popular. BOE and AU Optronics have begun to ship 8K panels one after another, and they are extremely optimistic about this trend from the perspective of investment. TV manufacturers are not idle either. Sharp took the lead in launching consumer-grade 8K TVs last year, and Samsung, LG, Hisense, and Sony are also following up.

Third-party agencies predict that the proportion of 60-inch or larger 8K TVs will increase from 1% in 2017 to 9% in 2020. The data looks good, but like 4K, panels and TV equipment are just one of the links. The real development and popularization of 8K TV will also suffer from the drag of the industry chain. Can the content keep up? How about the transmission equipment? So when consumers pay, 8K TV still has a long way to go.
