Facebook's new patent application shows that AR enhanced display breakthrough technology

Facebook is working hard to develop the breakthrough technology needed for future smart glasses. Futuristic smart glasses in Facebook's vision allow you to see virtual objects in the real world.

Three members of Oculus's senior R&D department, a virtual reality subsidiary of Facebook, submitted a patent application on "Waveguides with 2D scanners" on Thursday.

Patent documents show that such displays "can enhance the real-world real-world environment through computer-generated elements and may be integrated into a frame and display assembly that can be worn on the eye to present media content to the user's eyes. ."

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said virtual reality and augmented reality are the next generation of important computing platforms that can replace smartphones and traditional PCs. Facebook bought Oculus for $2 billion in 2014 and plans to invest billions of dollars to develop the technology.

According to a patent application filed on Thursday, Oculus's smart glasses will use a waveguide display that projects light directly onto the wearer's glasses instead of the traditional display. The smart glasses display images and video, and work with networked speakers or headphones to play audio when worn.

Facebook declined to comment.

Facebook's approach to using Waveguide technology is similar to that of Microsoft and startup Magic Leap, which developed similar techniques for AR helmets and smart glasses.

In fact, one of the authors of this patented technology is Oculus optical scientist Pasi Saarikko, who previously worked on Microsoft's optical design for HoloLens and joined Facebook in 2015.

This patent application implies that the underlying technology development work for Facebook smart glasses has been completed, but it is not expected to see official products soon. Oculus chief scientist Michael Abrash recently said that AR smart glasses will not be able to replace smartphones until at least 2022.

He said at the Facebook Developers Conference earlier this year: "I expect that from now 20 to 30 years, we will no longer carry stylish smartphones, but wear stylish smart glasses. Those Smart glasses will provide VR, AR and anything between them, and we will use them every day."
