Recently, BMW i launched another world-first original integrated inductive charging device for plug-in hybrids. This innovative technology will be put into production in July 2018. As part of the new “First Strategy,†the BMW Group is leading the development of breakthrough charging technology that greatly enhances the convenience and everyday practicality of electric vehicles. The BMW 5 Series plug-in hybrid will be powered by the technology and will be launched in Germany, the UK, the US, Japan and China.
BMW wireless charging technology charges the car's high-voltage battery through AC, without any cables, just park the car directly above the charging base. It can be installed in the garage, the car is parked in place, and the charging process begins (no further instructions from the driver). The introduction of this technology has enabled the BMW Group to go further in the field of equipment. In the future, the charging process of electric vehicles will be more convenient than the refueling of internal combustion engines.
The BMW Wireless Charging Kit includes an inductive charging base (charging base) that can be installed in a garage or outdoor parking space, and a vehicle component (vehicle induction coil) that is attached to the bottom of the vehicle. The non-contact energy transfer between the charging substrate and the induction coil can be performed at a distance of about 8 cm. The principle is that the charging substrate generates a magnetic field, and the in-vehicle induction coil induces a current to charge the high-voltage battery. The system provides 3.2 kW of charging power and fully charges the power battery in the BMW 5 Series plug-in hybrid in just three and a half hours.
Inductive charging: greatly enhances convenienceBMW wireless charging uses inductive charging technology that has been widely used in mobile phones, electric toothbrushes and other devices. Its main advantage is its unparalleled ease of use – drivers no longer need to use cables to connect vehicles. Instead, the car can be started as soon as the car is in place and the start/stop button is pressed. When the battery is fully charged, the system will automatically shut down.
The BMW Wireless Charging System also helps drivers find the right parking spot. The communication between the charging station and the vehicle is connected wirelessly; the top view of the vehicle and its surroundings appears on the control display and is marked with colored lines to guide the driver during the parking process. The system will prompt you when it reaches the correct parking position of the inductive charging station. At present, the parking position can be up to 7 cm in the longitudinal direction and up to 14 cm in the lateral direction.
The charging substrate can also be installed outdoors and used in any weather conditions. All conductive components are protected against rain and snow, and the car will not cause any damage if it passes over the charging substrate. During the charging process, the range of ambient electromagnetic radiation is also limited to the chassis of the car. The charging substrate monitors the surrounding environment at any time, and the charging process is turned off whenever any foreign matter is found.
BMW Wireless Charging further demonstrates the BMW Group's ongoing commitment to creating a versatile and practical charging experience. As early as 2015, the BMW Group received the “Momentum for Change†environmental award from the United Nations in recognition of its achievements. As one of the founders of the IONITY joint venture, the BMW Group is currently working with other automakers to build a fast-charging network covering all of Europe, providing electric vehicles with up to 350 kW of charging. By 2020, the company expects to provide 400 electric vehicle charging stations. In addition, BMW i's instant charging service currently offers more than 130,000 charging posts in 32 countries, making it the world's largest charging network.
BMW Group leads the global electric travel developmentAs an important part of advancing the new “first strategyâ€, the BMW Group continues to expand its electric mobility. In 2017, the group completed the goal of delivering 100,000 electric vehicles during the year. In 2018, this target was raised to 140,000. By the end of 2019, 500,000 electric vehicles will be delivered worldwide. Currently, this goal has been nearly half done. In 2025, the BMW Group will offer customers 25 electric vehicle options, 12 of which are powered by pure electric.
In China, the BMW New Energy family covers the BMW i3, BMW i8, the new BMW 5 Series plug-in hybrid, the BMW X1 plug-in hybrid, the BMW X5 plug-in hybrid, and the BMW 7 Series plug-in hybrid. The six cars in the range cover the product matrix from compact cars to large luxury cars, from SUVs to super sports cars, and are the most abundant brands in China's luxury new energy vehicle market.
In addition, BMW is actively promoting the construction of a new energy ecosystem, providing Chinese customers with a complete and convenient electric vehicle travel experience through six major aspects: brand and product, innovative technology, charging network, research and development capabilities, electric travel services and battery technology. Taking public charging as an example, by the end of 2018, BMW will provide more than 80,000 instant charging piles in China, covering more than 100 cities, providing BMW's electric vehicle users with more efficient, convenient and intelligent public charging services.
