March 15, 2017 - Silicon Labs (also known as "core technology") continues to enhance the EFM32TM Gecko microcontroller (MCU) family of products to meet the needs of embedded developers for designing next-generation secure, high-end IoT devices. With Silicon Labs' new Jade and Pearl Gecko MCUs, developers can easily add touch control interfaces, powerful security features and a variety of low-power sensors to IoT devices. The new MCUs are optimized for high performance, low power applications and support for updating end products via online (OTA).
Jade and Pearl Gecko MCUs offer state-of-the-art hardware encryption with an energy-efficient security accelerator, true random number generator (TRNG) and security management unit (SMU) to ensure secure connection of IoT devices without sacrificing battery life. The encryption/decryption accelerator runs the latest security algorithms with higher performance and lower power consumption than traditional software implementations. In addition to the traditional memory protection unit, the security management unit is able to configure a finer level of security for peripheral access via software. Peripherals can also be individually protected by hardware, and only authorized to allow access to the peripheral's register interface.
Compared with the previous generation Jade and Pearl Gecko products, the new MCU has more flash capacity (up to 1024KB with dual-zone architecture) and RAM capacity (up to 256KB), enabling the development of functions that support real-time operating systems such as Micrium OS. Rich embedded applications have become easier. The dual-zone storage architecture enables reliable field upgrades even after product deployment.
Based on ARM® Cortex®-M3 and M4 processors, the enhanced Jade and Pearl MCUs feature ultra-low active current, multiple sleep modes, and other architectural features to ensure safe, battery-powered IoT products while supporting high performance and support Other embedded systems with low power consumption. The new MCU also includes an advanced capacitive sensing controller that remains active while the device is in an energy-saving deep sleep mode, supporting capacitive touch operation, eliminating the cost and design complexity typically associated with the need to add an off-chip controller. These MCUs also feature Silicon Labs' LESENSE sensor interface, which allows sensor input to be automatically detected while the MCU core is in sleep mode.

The new Jade and Pearl MCU software is compatible with the full range of EFM32 Gecko MCUs and Wireless Gecko SoCs, enabling the widest range of software reuse, saving developers time and money. Silicon Labs plans to introduce new Gecko MCU products later this year with higher performance, larger storage, lower power peripherals and industrial communication capabilities.

The EFM32JG12 Jade Gecko and EFM32PG12 Pearl Gecko MCUs are now available in volume quantities and are available in 7mm x 7mm QFN48 and 7mm x 7mm BGA125 packages. At 10,000-piece quantities, Jade Gecko starts at $3.01 and Pearl Gecko starts at $3.39.
