Developed by the Digital Media Lab, Google, and the University of Haast, this Smartwatch called WatchThru allows users to experience holograms without using any augmented reality glasses. The device is based on a typical smartwatch and provides users with a holographic experience by adding "folded, translucent displays." The display can simply act as a second screen, allowing the wearer to video chat with friends, while clicking on links or scrolling photos. However, the display can also operate in a "peep" mode, displaying 3D enhanced content, just like HoloLens.
For example, you don't need to rely on Google Maps to find a restaurant now. Just use the second screen of the watch to display the 3D arrows. The system will provide you with accurate location navigation. The watch can also be integrated with augmented reality applications, including some hidden objects in the display environment, such as the location of a light socket in a room.
Since the wrist is independent of the face, WatchThru is a more sophisticated technique than augmented reality glasses (on the bridge of the nose). Although the watch currently requires an external camera to track the device and the wearer's face, the researchers hope that these tracking applications can be directly incorporated into WatchThru in future iterations.
