Two years ago, Boston Dynamics' humanoid robot Atlas also needed a large safety rope to drag it along a flat route. Five years ago, it needed a large bolted support structure to stay upright.
Now, it can jump up and over obstacles casually, knowing that this action can make many people breathless.
The company demonstrated Atlas’ new skills in a video released on the morning of the 12th:
Atlas showed that it had crossed a piece of wood, and then all the way forward, jumped onto a set of 40 cm steps.
Although allowing a huge, heavy robot to walk on both feet is a feat accomplished by a few companies, there are a series of new challenges. Let Atlas' lower limbs move up and down on the steps, while appropriately transferring weight and momentum to one foot, without causing face down, which requires a complex set of mechanics. Please pay attention to the lateral jump, we can see in slow motion that the hips/feet seem to be a bit tilted to compensate.
For those who are curious: Boston Dynamics recently disclosed data that Atlas weighs about 180 pounds.
Obviously at this moment, we have changed from "haha, look at the funny robot running like a human" to "I am pretty sure that the robot can beat me".
