Zuckerberg: $1 AR application will replace physical TV

Mark Zuckerberg said at Facebook’s first-quarter telephone earnings conference that Augmented Reality will replace your physical TV within the next decade.

Facebook recently launched a dedicated augmented reality platform for Facebook Camera that allows users and designers to create augmented reality. At the telephone earnings conference on Wednesday, Zuckerberg said that augmented reality will replace expensive physical entities such as TVs with simple one-dollar applications. Zuckerberg said he believes that open source camera applications will allow Facebook to take a leading position in the development of augmented reality. Although there is no mention of Snapchat's name, Facebook is clearly targeting this market.

Zuckerberg pointed out that Augmented Reality does not replace TVs with devices such as smart phones, but through augmented reality glasses. He said: "I think that things like television, you will no longer need physical TV, you will get a $ 1 application that allows you to watch the screen." He added that many physical entities do not actually need to maintain physical status.

But Zuckerberg doesn't just want to replace your TV. "As time goes on, this kind of content will augment the real world and eventually replace them, and I think it will be an interesting opportunity."

"There will be many new things in the future that we don't even have today. With object recognition and computer vision, (you) can point the camera at something and get information about the card, maybe even a buy button." It sounds like an augmented reality version of Google Earth, but augmented reality is a key part of the Facebook Act 2 project and an important means for Facebook to recapture users from competitors such as Snapchat.

Zuckerberg said: "A lot of things are still very far away, or may take 5 to 10 years, but we hope to push it forward." He also pointed out that after the open source Facebook Camera platform, developers around the world can pass Their smart phones to build augmented reality. This has brought convenience to developers around the world, while allowing Facebook to lead Snapchat in replacing TV.
