Taiwan AU Optronics announced on March 15 that it has applied to the Ministry of Economic Affairs of Taiwan to build a 7.5-generation LCD panel production line in Kunshan City, Jiangsu Province. AUO will invest US$3 billion in a wholly-owned manner, of which US$1.2 billion will be invested in equity and the remaining US$1.8 billion will be local financing. It is planned to mass production at the end of 2011, and the monthly production capacity is reported to be 80,000 to 90,000 pieces.
China is currently showing an investment boom in the high-generation line of LCD panels. There are currently eight publicly available, and AUO's plan will be the ninth high-generation line if it can be approved. In addition, Taiwan's Chi Mei also has plans to build factories in mainland China. Up to now, the LCD high-generation lines announced by various companies are as follows:
BOE: Hefei 6th generation line and Beijing's 8th generation line
Huaxing Optoelectronics: Shenzhen 8th generation line
Longfei Optoelectronics: Kunshan 8th Generation Line
CLP Panda: Nanjing 6th generation line, is expanding to 8 generation line
Samsung: Suzhou 7th generation line
LG: Guangzhou 8th generation line
For China's investment in LCD high-generation line boom, some experts pointed out that if the above plans are fully realized, the global LCD panel will exceed supply.
