Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have more advantages than incandescent lamps, compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) or halogen lamps. We can recall that these advantages include higher lumens/watts, longer life, vibration insensitivity, momentary turn-on, dimming, good color rendering and extremely flexible overall lamp shape.
Traditional stack lights, tower lights or lights in the factory used to have a separate lamp for each color (Figure 1). These lights can be easily replaced with white LED lights with a colored casing or red, amber - or green LED lights with a white casing.

Table 1 lists the standardized color coding of the industrial stack indicator to indicate the status of the production equipment or process.

The TI Designs RGB LED Tower (TIDA-00979) for industrial automation reference design allows you to instruct process and manufacturing equipment in an intelligent and extremely flexible way. In addition to the standardized color coding shown in Table 1, you can define any other color at any time. In addition, brightness control, flash or level indication is also easy to implement.
In addition to the universal switch control of the different types of lamps, the reference design's control scheme establishes connections for fully intelligent plants such as IO-Link standards and wireless control.
The reference design uses two different printed circuit boards (PCBs): a power and control printed circuit board (Figure 2) and an LED control circuit board (Figure 3). The LMZ35003 DC/DC converter module has a nominal input voltage of 24V, which produces 12V of the required voltage (with high efficiency) for three series LEDs on the LED control board. The MSP430TM controller will set the different modes of the TLC5971 LED driver via SPI. The 12-channel LED controller can independently set the LED current (maximum 60mA / channel) and brightness.

It enables control between one and five LED boards or even more segments via a high power DC/DC converter. With this flexible approach, you can achieve a variety of different styles and colors (Figure 4).
