The LT3080 is a 1.1A low dropout linear regulator that can be connected in parallel to increase output current or dissipate heat on surface mount boards. Designed as a precision current source and voltage follower, the new regulator can be used in many applications that require high current, are tunable to zero, and have no heat sink. Moreover, the device also introduces the collector of the pass transistor for low dropout operation (down to 350mV) when used with multiple input supplies.
An important feature of the LT3080 is its ability to provide a wide output voltage range. With a reference current flowing through a single resistor, the output voltage can be set to any level between 0V and 36V. The LT3080 is stable when using a 2.2μF capacitor on the output, and the IC uses a small ceramic capacitor that does not require additional ESR, which is often not possible with other regulators.
Internal protection circuitry includes current limiting and thermal limiting. The LT3080 regulator features an 8-pin MSOP (with an exposed pad for improved thermal characteristics), a 3mm x 3mm DFN, a 5-pin DD-Pak, a TO-220, and a simple 3-pin SOT-223 package.
