The Dutch research institute Holst Centre plans to achieve a practical level of organic EL lighting manufactured by roll-to-roll (RtoR) and billboards using roll-to-roll organic EL lighting from 2014 to 2015. At the Organic Semiconductor Conference 2008 (OSC-08), an international conference on organic semiconductor technology held in Frankfurt, Germany, the company announced the above information during the speech and later interviewed by the reporter. At present, the company has prototyped a manufacturing device that uses a 300mm wide metal foil for the bottom plate.
The roll-to-roll method refers to a method of mass-produced printed matter or the like at a low cost like printing a newspaper. Specifically, the flexible film wound on the reel is used as a bottom plate, on which various electronic circuits are printed, and then wound onto a reel. Printed is a flexible product that can achieve a significant cost reduction when mass production of organic EL lighting films.
Recently, many manufacturers have been involved in the development of organic EL lighting. Japanese companies such as Lumiotec, Matsushita Electric Works and Konica Minolta, which are jointly established by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Roma, Letterpress and Mitsui, are planning to supply samples from 2009 to 2011. For overseas companies, General Electric (GE), Opto Semiconductors GmbH, and Philips Lighting of the Netherlands are also developing organic EL lighting.
Among the above manufacturers, General Electric and Konica Minolta began to cooperate in the development of organic EL lighting in March 2007. Both companies insist on the development of organic EL lighting using volume-to-volume. On the other hand, Philips Lighting announced on September 16, 2008 that it will lead the Lumiblade, an organic EL lighting product with a maximum area of ​​50cm2 in 2009.
