Overview
The MAX8939 power management IC includes the necessary power and features to support handset design for the Intel Mobile Communications (IMC) 61XX 3G platform. The MAX8939 is designed to power all of the platform's peripheral circuitry, providing the necessary signals to control the 61XX baseband processor.
The integrated Li-Ion (Li+) charger features up to 28V input protection and a protected output power supply for USB transceivers. A proprietary thermal management circuit can limit the die temperature during fast charging or when the chip is exposed to high temperatures, allowing maximum charging current without damaging the IC. A current regulator is provided to drive the charge indicator LED.
Four programmable low noise, low dropout linear regulators (LDOs) power the noise sensitive peripheral circuitry. The high power oscillator driver can program 70 PWM levels and 4 output voltages via I2C. The device also offers two boost converters, one high-power, low-voltage (5V) power supply for external audio amplifiers or camera flash, and a high-voltage (28V) power supply for the display and keyboard backlight. Two integrated 25mA current regulators are available through I2C programming to provide independent linear rise and fall control.
The MAX8939/MAX8939A are highly integrated ICs that require a small package size of 2.5mm x 3.0mm and a maximum height of 0.65mm in a wafer-level package (WLP) with few external components.
