The ARM Cortex core changes the traditional form of MCU products. After all, common standards help reduce overall system costs, reduce design complexity, and shorten development time. Developers need to consider many factors when choosing an MCU for a particular design, such as memory size, number of input and output pins, and communication interfaces. However, under the circumstance that many MCU products based on ARM standard cores meet the basic requirements, SILICon Labs believes that developers can further narrow the selection from the following factors, such as: mixed-signal integration, configurability, power consumption, and development Difficulty and so on. Silicon Labs expects to reshape the versatility, integration, energy efficiency, and ease of use of the 32-bit MCU product segment with the Precision32 family of products.
Integrate multiple peripherals to reduce system costThe Precision32 combines the Cortex-M3 CPU and a variety of analog components, including: two 12-bit ADCs, two 10-bit DACs, an oscillator, a 16-channel touch sensor, and Flash flash, timers, counters, and a serial interface Such as (Figure 1), applicable to various fields including portable medical devices, sales terminal peripherals, motor control, industrial monitoring, bar code scanners, optical touch screen interface, sensor controllers and home automation systems.

According to reports, this series of products has a high degree of integration of peripherals and integrates a sophisticated phase-locked loop (PLL) precision oscillator without the need for expensive 8MHz crystals, providing high-precision clocks for USB operations without external crystals. At the same time, the core can work independently at any frequency from 1MHz to 80MHz; the internal 5V regulator allows the MCU to be powered directly from a USB or 5V supply, eliminating the need for an external voltage regulator; six high-drive I/Os (up to 300mA each) can be directly Drives high-power LEDs, small motors, buzzers, and power MOSFETs and can be used as a boost converter controller; with up to 16 capacitive touch channels, eliminating the need for additional touch sensor ICs in button, slider, or wheel applications; Precision32 Series The product provides a complete USB 2.0 PHY and analog front end that can be directly connected to the USB controller interface, while most other MCUs require external USB pull-up resistors and termination circuitry. By integrating the above on-chip peripherals, the number of peripheral components and system costs are greatly reduced (Figure 2), which can save BOM costs by up to 1.34 US dollars.

Continuing 8-bit MCU AdvantageAccording to Mike Salas, General Manager of Microcontroller Product Lines at Silicon Labs, the company has more than 10 years of experience in the development of 8-bit MCU products. Therefore, when developing Precision32, it continued many advantages of its predecessor products: The first is low-power design aspects. , Reduces power consumption per MCU block through Silicon Labs' patented low-power design techniques, reducing operating current by up to 33% (22mA or 275μA/MHz at 80MHz) and lowering the sleep current compared to other comparable 32-bit solutions 100x (0.35μA, Start RTC and 4KB RAM Content Retention). In addition, a variety of power modes and clock options can optimize design and achieve the lowest power consumption at specific performance levels.
Second, in the choice of architecture, the 8-bit MCU's Crossbar architecture continues to be optimized (Figure 3), and combined with a drag-and-drop GUI, developers can more easily select the desired analog and digital peripherals, and Peripheral allocation pins. While MCUs of the same type typically require pre-defined peripheral locations and pins, resulting in potential pin conflicts, they are forced to either change designs or use larger, more expensive packages.
Figure 3, The patented Crossbar architecture ensures maximum flexibility.
In addition, there are no advantages in the design of external crystals and ADCs. Mike Salas believes that competitors may pay more attention to flash, RAM, and so on in the MCU development process, while Silicon Labs is unique in terms of mixed-signal processing and integration, and Precision32-series analog peripherals have full temperature and voltage (low Rated characteristics within the range of 1.8V).
MCU Product Strategy Interpretation
Why does Silicon Labs still have a soft spot for Cortex-M3 when many MCU makers launch products based on ARM Cortex-M4? Skipping 16-bit MCUs and introducing 32-bit products directly, but also for what considerations?
Mike Salas said that after an in-depth market research, Silicon Labs believes that the Cortex-M3 market is not saturated and there is still plenty of room for development. Starting from this core would be a good choice. The reason why 16-bit products were skipped is mainly because Silicon Labs has introduced some high-performance products comparable to 16-bit MCUs in the 8-bit MCU era. Therefore, it is no longer focused on developing 16-bit products, but on 32-bit MCUs. The market seizes more market opportunities, and the MCU market is laid out through an 8-bit and 32-bit common development strategy. Mike Salas said: "The integration and processing of mixed signals has always been a top priority for Silicon Labs' innovation, including remote sensor, mixed-signal processing, wireless controllers, etc. We will innovate in many ways, not only in Core processing, as well as low-power, power-efficient peripheral integration.
